Ngabuburit (spending the late afternoon before breaking the fast) is often filled with simple activities: taking a walk, hunting for takjil, or hanging out with friends. However, Widya Erti Indonesia offers a different way to spend ngabuburit, namely through the "Breaking the Fast with Deaf Friends" , held at Blok M Hub on Saturday, March 14, 2026. This event invites participants to use their ngabuburit time to learn and foster a more inclusive space for conversation in public settings.
In this activity, participants are introduced to basic sign language , guided directly by Deaf peers. The learning sessions took place in a relaxed and interactive atmosphere. Participants were divided into small groups to make it easier to learn some simple vocabulary and immediately practice it with the Deaf peers in each group.
Through these interactions, participants not only learned about sign language as a communication tool but also gained a broader understanding of the experiences of their Deaf peers in accessing communication facilities in public spaces. The discussions and conversations that took place during the event showed that building inclusive communication can begin with a simple step: the willingness to learn and understand one another.
This event was made possible through a collaboration among various parties committed to the issue of inclusivity, namely MRT Jakarta, HearMe, and Cafe Sunyi, which together provided a meeting space for the community to learn and interact in a more inclusive manner. Support was also provided byKasoem Hearing Center , which provided goodie bags for the participants.
In addition to serving as a space for learning and gatherings, this event also has a social purpose: all registration fees collected from participants will be donated to the Indonesian Association of Women with Disabilities (HWDI) as a form of support for efforts to empower women with disabilities. a. Through this collaboration, the event is expected not only to provide a learning experience for participants but also to help expand opportunities for the disability community to participate.
This activity is also part of the development of Sahabat WIDI, a community initiated by Widya Erti Indonesia to provide a space for gathering, learning, and collaboration for people who want to get involved in various social initiatives. Moving forward, Sahabat WIDI plans to organize more activities that provide opportunities for people to learn, share experiences, and work together to promote greater access and a more inclusive environment.
Widya Erti Indonesia hopes that more public spaces will be opened up for community gatherings, while also raising awareness that equal access to communication is an essential part of an inclusive society.
